This is the best single day of temple architecture in Karnataka. Shravanabelagola has a 57-foot naked monolith of Gomateshwara on a bare hill, reached by 600 steps, carved in 981 CE. Belur’s Chennakeshava temple and Halebidu’s Hoysaleswara temple are the masterpieces of Hoysala work — soapstone carved to a fineness that reads like ivory, with friezes of elephants, horses and dancers running around the walls.
