Nagarjunakonda was a great Buddhist centre of the Ikshvaku period, and when the Nagarjuna Sagar dam was built the site was submerged — the monuments were moved to a hilltop that became an island, reached by a boat across the reservoir. The museum there holds the sculpture, and the reconstructed stupas and temples stand on the island. The Ethipothala falls are a short drive away.
