Things to carry

• Warm layers — the high lakes and the north Sikkim valleys sit above 3,500 m even in summer
• Valid photo ID — the Tsomgo, Nathang and north Sikkim roads are checked at army checkposts
• Shoes with grip for the monastery steps and the trek paths
• Sunblock and sunglasses — the high-altitude sun is strong even when it is cold
