Kannur has some of the least developed beaches in Kerala. Payyambalam has a park and a memorial to the freedom fighters of the district; Meenkunnu, further north, has a rock outcrop with a lighthouse and a view along the coast. Both are quiet, both are local rather than resort beaches, and the town behind them has distinctly Mappila food — pathiri, alisa and biryani that is different from the south.
