Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala — a laterite structure from the 17th century, built on a promontory with the sea on three sides and a wide observation tower in the middle. It was fought over by the Kolathiri rajas, Shivappa Nayaka of Bednore, Tipu Sultan and finally the British. The day adds the beach below the fort and a boat on the Bekal backwaters beside it.
