Amaravati was the site of a great Buddhist stupa of the Satavahana period, and its carved limestone panels are among the finest Buddhist sculpture in India — much of it now in the site museum and the Chennai museum. The modern Dhyana Buddha statue stands above the river, and the town is on the Krishna just across from Vijayawada, with the Undavalli caves a short drive away.
